Our Year 1 Class

Hello and Welcome to Year 1!

We have been very impressed with how well all the children have settled into Year 1 and embraced our new routines. The children are working hard to meet our behaviour expectations and move their name up onto the recognition board! Their excellent behaviour shone through during our ‘Our Local Area’ learning walk, where the children were exceptionally well behaved and were a credit to our school.

So far in Year 1 we have been: artists, scientists, writers, musicians, sportspeople, mathematicians, digital illustrators, readers, and geographers! We have been learning about: collage in art; everyday materials in science; how to form letters, hold a pencil, and how to sit during handwriting; pulse and rhythm in music; creating, editing and storing our own designs via JIT software in computing; our rights and responsibilities as a member of Year 1 in PHSE; what Christians believe God is like in RE; catching, sending, and returning a ball as individuals and in pairs during PE; place value and addition in mathematics; revising our phase 2 & 3 sounds alongside our tricky words in phonics; reading Ravi’s Roar and thinking about the features of writing for entertainment and persuasion.

There are lots more exciting areas of learning to share during Autumn 2, including but not limited to: autumn and winter, toys in time, painting, gymnastics, and classical music. The children will be encouraged to become more independent with their learning, developing their perseverance and resilience even when they find things challenging. We will continue to support the children to reach their full potential in their learning. We will teach mathematics following WhiteRose planning resources; solving abstract questions using concrete apparatus such as counters, bead strings, counting bears and other objects alongside pictorial representations such as part-part wholes, place value charts, tens frames and the Hungarian number patterns (dice faces). Within English we will continue to use the Talk4Writing process; getting the children to recite work orally before writing, as well as developing handwriting via the Penpals scheme. Reading and writing will be further supported by daily phonics sessions together with us listening to the children read and recall their Rocket Words.

If you wish to learn more about what we get up to in Year 1 or have any other queries, please contact either myself or Mrs Morris.

Thank you for visiting the Year 1 page. Miss Ellam
