Our Reception Class

Reception – Foundation Stage

Welcome to Reception!

The Reception team is Miss Davis (teacher) and Mrs Williams (teaching assistant).

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) we provide a safe, secure and caring environment where children feel happy and know that they are valued. We give children the opportunities to build upon their experiences and interests, developing self-esteem and confidence. We aim to make a real difference to your child as a young learner by giving them lots of opportunities to learn through their play.

In Reception the children learn through playing and exploring, being active and being creative. Activities are planned to reflect their areas of curiosity in order to encourage and develop their natural desire, excitement and motivation to learn.

We aim to inspire children’s independence, perseverance and decision making during every task and activity we set. Together we develop the children’s understanding of social skills such as taking turns, sharing and the value of positive behaviour. These skills are foundation stones to ensure that the next stages of their learning are as successful as possible.

Each area of learning and development is implemented through planned, purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities. Sometimes this is planned for the individual child, as a small group or for the whole class. We aim to deliver a curriculum tailored to meet the needs of the children in the class. The curriculum is taught both indoors and out in all the following areas:

· Personal, Social and Emotional Development

· Communication and Language

· Physical Development

· Literacy

· Mathematics

· Understanding of the World

· Expressive Arts and Design

Additionally, we teach daily sessions of Phonics. Children will then consolidate taught sounds in  child led and adult led activities throughout the week. We also begin our Rocket Words in Reception; these are predominantly based on the 100 High Frequency and Common Exception words. We encourage children to practise these at home and at school. Children also have weekly phonics and reading books to work on at home to support their learning in school.

Each half term we will have a topic that we base a selection of our activities around. The children will be aware of these. They will also be shared with you via our newsletters.

Thank you for your support with your child’s learning journey. We look forward to an exciting year ahead! If you have any questions, then please just ask.
