Year 4

Welcome to year 4!
During year 4 children will experience a variety of engaging lessons and activities which aim to build on their knowledge and assist them in reaching their full potential.
In core subjects the children will continue to build on previously taught skills alongside learning new techniques and how to apply them in order to become fantastic writers, readers and mathematicians.
We will be starting the year off by learning about the Romans with our first topic ‘Romans Rule’. We will then move onto other exciting topics over the year such as ‘Reign Over Us’, ‘World’s Kitchen’ and ‘Crime and Punishment’.
During the autumn term year 4 will go swimming every Monday morning and will also have PE in school on a Thursday so please ensure that children bring the correct kit into school for the right days.
Children will be tested on their spellings each Monday and given a new set of spellings to practise at home ready for the following week. Children will also have times tables test on a Monday and need to be working on these at home throughout the year. Occasionally there will be other pieces of formal homework sent home, but in the meantime I would like children to be practising basic number and arithmetic skills and writing as much as possible for fun at home. There are also lots of grammar, maths and spellings games and activities online you can complete too.
It is important that children are reading either independently or with an adult at home with a wide variety of books to help build their fluency and give them a wider vocabulary to help their writing styles. Our reading display this year is ‘Look who’s reading!’ which already has some lovely pictures of the children reading in class.  It would be great to add some candid pictures of the children reading at home too, so please feel free to send in small photos of your child reading in an unusual place or sharing a book with someone for our display.
The children have all settled well into the new expectations for year 4 and I hope throughout the year they are all going to try their hardest in everything that they do!
I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year filled with learning and laughter and I hope the children are too!
